Adoption Circle - February 2024 Newsletter

Well February closed with a bang, and several tornadoes throughout central Ohio. There were a record number of tornadoes on 2/28/24. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the tornadoes. We are looking forward to calmer weather in March. Outside of the tornadoes, we will take a look back at the other events in February.

Black History Month

There's So Much Black History Here! - The Messenger News

We recognized and celebrated Black History Month in February. Black History Month aims to honor the contributions that African Americans have made and to recognize their sacrifices. Are you aware that some of the most influential African Americans were adopted or raised by family members?

George Washington Carver was born into slavery and after the abolition of slavery was raised by a Caucasian family as their own son. He was encouraged to read and write and to become a scientist. George Washington Carver developed a crop rotation method for nitrate-producing crops such as peanuts and corn. His innovations have been credited with the South’s economic survival in the early part of the 20th century. George Washington Carver inventions are many of the household products used today. Among the products credited to George Washington Carver are: plastics, synthetic rubber, paper, adhesives, axle grease, bleach, chili sauce and instant coffee to name a few. He developed 300 products from peanuts and 118 from sweet potatoes.

Maya Angelou, known for her great literary works such as “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”, was raised by her paternal grandmother. Maya Angelou was the first African American woman to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.

February was also a month for love. Many celebrated Valentine’s Day on February 14th. Nothing is cuter than the love of two big brothers for their little baby sister.

Finalizations

Two families finalized their adoptions in February. Big CONGRATULATIONS to all!

A Note from the Director of Birth Parent Services:

Adoption can be a long process and scary at times. Once you have adopted a child, there are still questions and there is always a need for adoption support. The following article is written by an adoptive mother. Admittedly, although she researched adoption, she felt like with any life experience, she was not fully prepared. The following link is to the article which is titled 10 Things No one tells You About Adoption. https://www.roseclearfield.com/10-things-no-one-tells-you-about-adoption/

Also a reminder about book club. We are looking to start up our book club again, so please contact kim@adoptioncircle.org with book or Podcast recommendations.

Looking forward to the April newsletter and highlighting all the March events, which includes National Social Worker Month. If you don’t follow us on our social media accounts, please do so. We post several times throughout the month.  FaceBook, Instagram, Twitter
