We can’t believe the shortest month of the year is nearing an end. It has been a month of celebrations. We celebrate Black History Month in February. Adoption Circle honors and celebrates diversity. This month we had a social media post for a Master Class on Amazon Prime on Black History, Black Freedom and Black Love. If you don’t follow us on social media, you can access the information at https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B09PQCJ23Y. This 18-part series is for adults/parents to learn more about Black History and educate themselves and their children. As an agency who celebrates diversity, we have placed numerous children of African American heritage and feel it is important to continue to access resources and celebrate Black History Month!
On 2/22/22, Tuesday, or TWOSDAY, we celebrated the twin placements our agency completed. We did a fun social media post on some of the Twins we have placed. You can see the post on our social media, but also wanted to share some fun photos of our twins in honor of 2/22/22 TWOSDAY.
On February 18, 2022 Adoption Circle was asked to be part of a panel For the 4th Annual Family Planning Week. This annual event is organized by The Ohio State University Student Advocates for Sexual Health Awareness (SASHA). The panelists were Pamela Hook (Adoption Circle) and Dr. Kami Dixon and Dr. Worly. The doctors are OB-GYN doctors through Ohio State. Dr. Dixon is also the Medical Director for Moms2B. Moms2B is a program for expectant moms who are high risk for infant mortality or death of a living baby before the baby’s first birthday. The program offers prenatal education and incentives for attendees. The goal is to get the infant mortality rate below 5% in the Columbus area. In the African American community the infant mortality in the Columbus area is 11%. The panelist answered questions about reproductive health, prenatal care, and the adoption process if expectant moms decide to complete an adoption plan instead of parent. It was inspiring to hear about the programs to improve prenatal health, but also realize there needs to be further steps to decrease socioeconomic factors that prevent some women from receiving the prenatal care needed. It was an honor to be asked to be part of the panel, and hopefully will be asked again next year.
There are a couple of resources we would like to pass along. www.senstivematters.net is a company that has customized books on foster and or adoption. Each Adopted and Adored book is quick, easy and fun to make. Parents can change any of the words, move the clipart illustrations and add or delete photos or pages so that it’s YOUR family story. The books are for the age ranges 0-4 years or 5-8 years of age. Also, from the desk of the Birth Mother Director, Kim, there is a resource she would like to share in the event a Birthmother changes her mind and decides to parent. You can access the information through www.mardiecaldwell.com (Mardie’s Blog—"What to Do if Birthmother Changes Her Mind”).
